The Meeting Place
This image explores the history and construction of Blackness, and the role of assimilation in the development of Black identity. The Meeting Place” is a title that suggests a convergence of pathways and different aspects of my identity and experiences. A meeting place of hybrid identities. The three versions of myself, each dressed in a distinct cultural attire, symbolize different stages of my personal journey or evolution. The Dallas bluebonnet dress, placed centrally, symbolizes my future in Dallas, while the Zimbabwean flame lily dress and the British Tudor dress, positioned at the parameters, represent the present and past aspects of my identity, respectively. The title ‘Meeting Place’ also echoes the Indibano residency program, a term that evokes the spirit of gathering and exchange. It represents the transformative interactions that shaped my residency experience
