The Northern Star by Tamary Kudita

The Northern Star

This image portrays an archetype of a woman pursuing the American Dream, leaving her home country to become a congresswoman. It serves as a tribute to Eddie Bernice Johnson, captured at the Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station in Dallas. Johnson was a trailblazer as the first Black woman elected to public office from Dallas and the first Black Dallasite to serve in Congress. Her legacy extends beyond her political achievements, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on their communities.

I titled it “Northern Star” because Eddie served as a compass and beacon of hope for her community. A strong female leader can provide consistent guidance and direction, illuminating the path forward and inspiring hope and optimism. The composition, with her towering figure paired with the American flag, speaks to her influence and the ideals of nationalism.
